John Buck named in New Year’s Honours list

John Buck named in New Year’s Honours list image

The awarding of a Companion of New Zealand Order of Merit (CMNZ) to Te Mata Estate’s John Buck, in his 70th year, caps a wonderful year in which John was named the 2012 recipient of the New Zealand Wine Hall of Fame award, and was made a member of Matahiwi, the marae of Maui in Hawke’s Bay.

The CMNZ recognises John’s leadership in the New Zealand wine industry and his contribution to the arts through the establishment of the New Zealand Poet Laureate award, and the restoration and on-going success of the Hawke’s Bay Opera House. It follows John’s previous awards of an OBE, an honorary doctorate from Lincoln University, and Fellowship of the Wine Institute of New Zealand.

“I’ve always believed that New Zealand wine, and the arts, can foot it with the world’s best.  All I’ve ever done is put that belief into practice.  It’s been a pleasurable challenge.” said John.

Since John’s earliest vintage in 1982, Te Mata Estate has been recognised as one of New Zealand’s greatest wine producers and its flagship wine, Coleraine as New Zealand’s greatest red wine. Prominent New Zealand wine journalist Sam Kim named Coleraine The greatest New Zealand wine ever made.”

John’s contribution to the New Zealand wine industry extends well beyond his role at Te Mata Estate. John helped with the founding and development of Hawke's Bay Vintners from its very early days (now Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers), when there were only seven wineries in Hawke's Bay, and was its Chairman in the 1980s.

In 1991, John established the Hawke’s Bay Charity Wine Auction, which continues today more than 20 years later, having raised more than $2 million for Hawke’s Bay’s Cranford Hospice and has bound Hawke’s Bay’s wine industry into its local community.

He represented Hawke's Bay on the Board of the New Zealand Wine Institute through the late 1980s and then, from 1991 to 1996, was the Chairman of the New Zealand Wine Institute. This was period of great change in New Zealand wine and John instigated and directed many initiatives that shaped the New Zealand industry of today.

EuroVintage are thrilled to see John receive this thoroughly deserved and hugely significant award.
